About
“SOUND IS THE FORCE OF CREATION, THE TRUE WHOLE.”
– Inayat Khan, The Mysticism of Sound and Music
I am a freelance recording / mixing engineer with considerable experience in all facets of production; equally comfortable making records in the studio or mixing for live audiences. That experience cuts across disciplines. The work I do in one area informs the others. Something done in a concert setting opens up a new possibility when mixing an album, while a studio recording or mix session lends something to how I approach a live concert.
I’ve worked with scores of successful artists in many world-class studios and have toured the world providing the live mixing for Joe Jackson, Natalie Merchant, Todd Rundgren, Ian Hunter, David Bromberg, Joan Baez, Aimee Mann, Maya Beiser, Ethel, Anoushka Shankar, Ani DiFranco, James Taylor, Larry Campbell, Phoebe Snow, The Pointer Sisters, Steve Miller, Zap Mama, Josh Ritter, Jeffrey Gaines and many others, mixing for audiences ranging from a few hundred in a small club to thirty thousand plus in arenas and stadiums. Many of these tours found me taking on the additional responsibility of tour manager.
I have an excellent recording studio / mixing room, The Sonik Lab, in Kingston NY in the bucolic environs of the Hudson Valley at the foot of the Catskill Mountains, the details of which I will be revealing soon. ( I am currently working on that website)
Should you or your organization require the uncompromising services of a professional, please contact me. I’d be more than happy to discuss the possibilities.

Live Production
GREAT SOUND MATTERS.
The excitement and challenge of getting it right in real time always gets the adrenaline flowing. The task is to unite the artist and audience in the moment. Both expect the very best. I’ll accept nothing less.
1. MIXING
The lights dim, the band takes the stage and the expectant audience cheers. The moment is now. The expectation runs wild. It’s show time! Will the sound match the excitement? If I have anything to do with it, you can count on it!
2. PRODUCTION
Long before the magic begins, contracts are made, relationships forged, lighting and stage plots designed, PA company retained, trucks hired, load-ins scheduled …
Been there, done that!
3. TOUR MANAGEMENT
On the road again. All fun and games? I think not. There are hotel reservations to be made, buses to lease , flights to book, schedules to sort, guest lists to be compiled, promotions, meet-and-greets, transportation arrangements, hospitality, show settlements, sound checks ….. You get the idea.
Yep, done that too!

MANAGEMENT
REST IN PEACE
Kind words
“George is a brilliant engineer, producer, TM, and all around live and studio production problem solver. He knows how to get the job done with the highest level of professionalism and efficiency. When you need the best the business can offer, call him. Period.”
“George does excellent work, very professional and experienced cat.”
“When you’ve worked with someone for over three decades, one can assume something is clicking. Regardless of how I have tortured him over the years, George has risen to every challenge thrown at him. Yet he remains a family friend and the first one we call when it’s time to put some crazed new idea out on the road. I expect that’s how it will be in the future unless I am outbid for his talents.”
“I’ve worked with George Cowan on many recording and mixing projects through the years, from Tesla, Metallica, and Alice Cooper to Lionel Richie, Cinderella and Anthrax. In every instance I found his opinion, expertise, and creativity to be outstanding. His work is always impeccable, he’s a pleasure to be around, and he’s always on time and thorough. I would recommend George for any creative project without hesitation.”
“George Cowan is one the greatest engineers I’ve had the privilege of working with. He and I worked together on the Joe Jackson “Fast Forward” tour. He made every night, in every concert hall, the greatest it could be. Inevitably, each of the many guests I met (engineers, producers, musicians, family, friends and fans) would ask “who mixed?”, telling me how incredible it sounded. George gave 1000%, never ceasing to explore pathways to improvement. I would recommend him to anyone who’s serious about getting the absolute best. Perhaps more importantly, he’s one of the most caring and kind hearted people I’ve known.”
“George is truly an “A List” engineer who’s talents and experience are an actual godsend for an audio project. I found that all facets of recording, mixing, engineering and reproduction were in such good and capable hands that we could completely focus on the creative challenges without ever having to be distracted by technical issues. …. his musicality and creative sense of adventure gave an added dimension and depth to our project. He made the experience 100 times more sonically special than we had envisioned and probably 1000 times more fun.”
“Hi George,
Loads of compliments on the sound last night. Here’s one from an email from an old musician friend of mine:
– New songs, great, band, wonderful, and who ever mixed your sound needs a very big slap on the back – crystal clear and captured all the emotion you put into it. After years of going to JJ concerts this was perhaps the highlight with regards to foh sound in the venue. I never heard it better! –
Alright!”
“George has worked with me as a recordist and mixer on several projects. He has never failed to give his all to each of them. His ability to get the sounds we wanted or to suggest things that would work in a mix is astounding. Every project we worked on together has gotten excellent reviews; they all bear up under years of repeated listening. I wish he had been available for everything I’ve ever recorded, he’s just that damn good.”
“I have known George for over 27 years. We call him first when we need an engineer; either in the studio or on tour. He steps up and takes on any extra responsibilities my husband, Todd Rundgren, and I throw at him, including Road and Production management. We rely heavily on his talents and have NEVER had a bad day. . He is very personable and easy to work with. I know many celebrity musicians who say the same.
George is a rare gem and we are lucky to be able to hire him for every project he is available for.”
“I worked with George several times, touring with Todd Rundgren’s band. He is a consummate professional, both as a live sound mixer and a tour manager. He performed both jobs concurrently, overseeing the transportation, hotel bookings, stage design, equipment maintenance and personal needs of the band and crew, which totaled 12 to 15 people. In addition, his sound mixing was impeccable, and he proved to be a quick, instinctive problem solver. He was knowledgeable, experienced and supportive to the band, crew and venue staffs, maintaining a calm, respectful demeanor and a great sense of humor.”
“I can not recommend George Cowan more highly. I met him in 1980 when I went to work for Todd Rundgren, George is an accomplished recording and FOH engineer and one of the very best that I have ever worked with. I also worked with him at Bearsville Studios during the 1980’s. He has an amazing ear, technical skills, excellent work ethic and always a pleasure to work and tour with.”
” George worked with my late husband Mick Ronson in Bearsville studios. Mick was always very happy working with George. Another friend of mine, Todd Rundgren, also works with George when he tours and the sound is fantastic. On a personal note I have known he and his family for many years; a more honest, upright, and talented man would be hard to find. He is reliable, likable and a lot of fun. I highly recommend him in his line of work in the studio or out on tour.”
“George is one of those rare people who allows employers and colleagues to sleep soundly. His skills and knowledge are profound. And many might think that alone is a good reason to hire him. But, I have found that what makes George a rare gem is his passion for the work and self-motivation to do the best job possible. I have seen him, time and time again, go the extra mile to make a good job turn into an excellent job. I have never hesitated to recommend George for a gig of any scale or complexity. He is truly a pleasure to work with.”
“I’ve known George since 1986 when we worked together at Bearsville Studios, a then recording facility in Bearsville,NY. He was a major (no inference intended) asset to the technical department of which I was chief. I’ve always known him to be a knowledgeable and conscientious proponent of the professional audio world and he invariably put his duties and aspirations at the forefront, even when the ceiling was falling down on him – literally. That he is highly regarded in our industry as a recording / live mix engineer is no surprise to me. He has my respect, and certainly my endorsement.”
“It’s always a treat when I get to work with George on the road…he does great sound, is super-professional tour manager, and great company to boot. The kind of guy you look forward to spending time with on the bus.”
“I’ve known George Cowan, personally, for well over 20 years. We have worked together on various projects with great results. I also consider him both a positive influence and a mentor. He’s experienced, wise, knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor! I still value his advice to this day and am grateful to have him as both a friend and a fellow professional.”
“George is a fantastic sound engineer and always at the top of my list when looking for someone to mix one of my artists. Not only will he get the best mix out of any situation he’s a great guy and gets along with everyone. If he’s is available, give him a chance to mix your act.”
“It’s never A MAJOR PRODUCTION when dealing with this long vetted, highly skilled and creative industry professional… Whatever the task is, George will move through it seamlessly and with great results. “
“George and I worked together while I was in Todd Rundgren’s band “Utopia”. He was not only a talented mixing engineer in the studio, but also a pioneering partner in the creation of a custom digital keyboard synthesizer system that we used on tour. Always a pleasure to work with. I’m happy to recommend him as a seasoned audio technology industry professional.”
“George is a top-flight self-employed professional Recording Engineer and Concert Sound Engineer with a very impressive resume.”
“George Cowan…
…is an old and dear friend, so I can hardly be expected to show any objectivity, but…George is a professional by any standards. I have worked with him in the recording studio and on many a long concert tour, and he brings his knowledge, exacting standards, consistency and, lest I forget, wicked humor to every situation. I’ve listened to records on which he has worked and attended live shows as an audience member where he has been the sound engineer, and am constantly impressed and often surprised, since many concert venues present almost daunting logistical and sonic challenges. George Cowan is an unsung hero…and I feel a song comin’ on!”
“I’ve worked with George on multiple projects and always loved working with him. We became good friends as a result of working together. He is great at what he does and is a very witty, creative person, which adds that special spark to any project. I highly recommend him!!”
“George is one of the most resourceful and resilient professionals I know. George is always learning about new technologies and his mixing taste is impeccable. It’s always a pleasure to work with him.”
“George is that guy, who, when you say ‘can I have a…”he says yes, I actually did that already”, with a smile. He’s on it. If he didn’t do it already, he, for sure, thought about it and is ready to do it. He’s an open minded genius and a team player. He made us all so happy on the Joe Jackson tour doing double duty as front of house and monitor engineer. I have nothing but good vibes and positivity for George and his work.”
“George is an extremely talented and motivated professional. He embodies a rare combination of technical expertise and artistic sensitivity. His work is impeccable and he is a true gentleman. I would highly recommend George as both a technical and mixing engineer.”
“George is a thoroughly knowledgeable sound engineer with a complete understanding of the nuances of concert audio and the ability to make the artists with whom he works feel comfortable and confident that their artistry will be represented to their audiences according to the very highest standards.”
“George and I worked on the Natalie Merchant tour together in 2010. George has a cool head under fire and is a first-rate engineer. He’s also someone you don’t mind spending weeks on a bus with. I hope to work with him again soon.”
